Micheál’s statement on Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami

Last updated on 11 Mar, 2011

Summary:

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to all those affected by today’s tragic earthquake in Japan.

The scale of the tragedy is difficult to comprehend. My thoughts today are with all of those affected in Japan and in other countries that have been affected by the resulting tsunami.

As a former Minister for Foreign Affairs I want to commend the work being undertaken by the department staff and officials in Japan. The department has established an emergency centre where relatives of those living in or visiting Japan can make contact.

I welcome the Taoiseach’s statement this afternoon and support his offer to assist the Japanese people in any way we can. In that context I believe utilisation of our Rapid Response Corps should be examined.
