Ireland to maintain base in Silicon Valley in 2011

Last updated on 06 Jan, 2011

Summary:

Ireland is to maintain a business centre established in Silicon Valley, California, to support Irish businesses chasing valuable high tech contracts into 2011, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin, TD.

“The base was established as a result of recommendations drawn up at last year’s Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh and has proved a vital resource for our companies as they seek new business which will secure jobs at home.”

“Operated by the Irish Technology Leadership Group, a network of business people with strong links with Ireland operating in the Valley, the centre received over $250,000 in funding from my Department in 2010 and I am now pleased to confirm the level of funding will continue in 2011.”

“As a former Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment I am keenly aware that in the business community of Silicon Valley networking is vital and the Technology Leadership Group is a resource that gives our small and medium sized companies an edge over other competitors in trying to attract new business.”

“Not only does the business centre give our companies a base from which they can operate the Leadership Group has also introduced a mentoring programme to show new Irish firms entering the valley for the first time how business is carried out.”

“The Centre was one of just many recommendations drawn up at Farmleigh which my Department continues to implement. The establishment of the Global Irish Forum has been a great success in allowing Ireland to tap into the expertise and advice of leading figures from our worldwide family. In 2011 that work will continue with meetings planned around the world.”

“In the coming weeks the Farmleigh Fellowship Programme at UCC which will see students travelling to Singapore and Asia for studies and work placements that will give them an insight into export markets where Ireland can do better.”

“It is clear our recovery will be export led with specialized companies selling their expertise to the world, the supports we have put in place are important if they are to succeed, concluded Minister Martin.
