Ireland releases further aid for Pakistan

Last updated on 10 Aug, 2010

Summary: Ireland is to provide a further €550,000 in emergency aid to the international response to the growing crisis in Pakistan, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD.

“The shocking newspaper and television pictures that continue to come out of the disaster zone show that the misery for countless men, women and children in the flood devastated regions is continuing. There is an urgent need for help, and Ireland remains ready to play its part.”

“The funding I am now announcing is in addition to €200,000 we provided to Trocaire in the early days of the crisis. The new emergency supplies will be divided between two of our aid agencies and the United Nation’s operation on the ground.
The funding will be distributed as follows:
• €300,000 to Concern to distribute food and essential humanitarian supplies to those who have been displaced by the flooding.
• €100,000 to Trócaire to support the distribution of food, water, cooking utensils and sanitary supplies to thousands of affected people. This is in addition to €200,000 already released to Trócaire in the aftermath of the disaster.
• €150,000 to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which is coordinating the UN and NGO response on the ground.

In addition experts of our Rapid Response Corps remain on standby in communities across Ireland. They are ready to travel to Pakistan if their expertise is required in the international rescue operation.”

“In addition to the funding committed by the Government on behalf of the Irish people, a number of aid agencies have also mounted special emergency campaigns.”

“Officials in my Department are continuing to monitor the impact of the unfolding disaster. They will examine how Ireland can best participate in the international operation and help the people of Pakistan during a disaster which looks set to have an impact for years, if not decades, to come”, concluded Minister Martin.
