Corks Art and Culture hits the States for 2011 - Martin
Last updated on 09 Jan, 2011
Summary:
Cork’s artists, performers, writers and academics will be to the fore during a year-long celebration of Irish culture across 42 States in the US during 2011, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD.
“The 12-month ‘Imagine Ireland’ celebration is a direct result of the Global Irish Economic Forum which I hosted at Farmleigh. The forum identified our arts and culture as having a key role in our economic recovery. We have seen the impact of Riverdance on our country, now we must build on that.”
“In 2011 major US cities from the East to the West Coast will host events to bring Irish culture to a new audience and ensure that whether in Broadway or Hollywood, Ireland and its many talented people are to the fore.”
“Corks rich artistic and cultural heritage as well as a new generation of talent will feature prominently during Irish festivals, exhibitions, concerts and other events that will mark this special year. Corks contribution includes:
• Masters of Tradition
From Bantry House, a unique evening of Irish traditional music featuring Martin Hayes, Iarla Ó Lionaird, Dennis Cahill, Máirtín O’Connor, Cathal Hayden, Seamie O’Dowd and David Power.
• Brian Ormond: IIII
A solo show of abstract art, featuring acrylic & oil on large panels by the Cork Artist in New York’s Foley Gallery. All new work from 2011.
• Group show: Wake Amusements
An exhibition of books by 12 Irish artists in Los Angeles organized by Curator Matt Packer, Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork.
• Dennis McNulty: in residence
A residency at Brown University, activating the newly built Granoff Center for Creative Arts and realizing a new piece of temporary public artwork.
In addition to these flagship events Cork will also be well represented in the hundreds of other activities which will mark the year. Cillian Murphy will be among the high profile Irish stars taking part and throwing their support behind this once off year.”
“When we met in Farmleigh the role of arts and culture in promoting Ireland was one of those areas highlighted, this special programme of events as well as the construction of a new Irish Arts Centre in New York are ensuring that our proud tradition is kept alive and that a focus is kept on our country.”
“I would encourage any Cork people travelling to the United States this year to check out if their visit coincides with any of the events, details of the programme are available at http://www.imagineireland.ie”, concluded Minister Martin.
