Last updated on 31 Jan, 2011
Summary:
Cork has once again emerged as the foremost county in the 2011 BT Young Scientist Exhibition and will account for 15% of the 520 entries at next week’s event, according to Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheál Martin, TD.
“Cork has an unrivalled record at the exhibition and this year is no different. As Education Minister, Enterprise Minister and now as Foreign Affairs Minister I am honoured each year to see how our young people are ensuring Ireland remains at the cutting edge of all areas of science.”
“More than 80 projects from Cork will be on display for the 32,000 visitors to the exhibition at the RDS. I expect the projects will cover the latest in technology, life sciences and many other areas with a focus on how we can respond to the many challenges in the 21st century.”
“Last year I was delighted to meet Cork winner, Richard O’Shea, from Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney, Co Cork and to see at first hand his project entitled, ‘A biomass fired cooking stove for developing countries’. The Irish Aid section of my Department continues to work to see how the stove can support its work in the developing world.”
“Richard’s went to victory in the European competition in Lisbon last September beating off stiff competition from 27 other countries, again underlining how our young people can compete with students from any other part of the world. In 2009 Cork students also took top honours with John D. O’Callaghan (aged 14) and Liam McCarthy (aged 13), 2nd year students from Kinsale Community School, winning with their project entitled, “The Development of a Convenient Test Method for Somatic Cell Count and its Importance in Milk Production”.
“This year Cork will be going for a three in a row and I want to wish all those participating every success and hope they have a great few days meeting their counterparts from every part of Ireland,” concluded Minister Martin.
