Cork-Dublin Trains Wi-Fi boost for business - Martin

Last updated on 06 Jan, 2011

Summary:

A decision by Irish Rail to introduce Free Wi-Fi on the entire Cork-Dublin rail fleet will allow business people and leisure travellers alike to use their journeys productively, according to Fianna Fáil TD and Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheál Martin.

“A tender process is underway for the introduction of Wi-Fi on the fleet of 67 carriages used on the flagship rail route. Already a pilot project operated last year has shown incredible demand for the service and I believe it will be particularly valuable to the many business people travelling between both cities every day.”

“It is expected that the tender process will be quick with an announcement due by March and the service rolled out from then. The tender represents the latest investment in what is now a rail link that can compete with some of the best in Europe.”

“The Government has transformed the Cork-Dublin train link with a complete fleet replacement as well as continuing track work. The value of the rail service was underlined during the recent severe weather when it continued to operate and proved invaluable for business and those returning home for Christmas.”

“Importantly the Wi-Fi service will not only allow passengers to surf the net but it will also permit business people to log in securely to their internal company networks and to check their emails.”

“It will allow business to continue while passengers are in transit. It is planned that the service will not be confined to laptops but will also be accessible by handheld devices such as smart phones, blackberries and Iphones which have become central to ensuring work is not delayed while people are in transit.”

“I want to encourage Irish Rail to ensure the process of awarding a contract is concluded as quickly as possible so as passengers can start surfing at the earliest date possible”, concluded Minister Martin.
